I started selling art in 4th grade making handmade stuffed paper bag turkeys for $5! From then on, I realized I had a knack for making things folks want. And here I am many years later creating fun colorful things and sharing them with the world.
Though I hold a degree in Communications Arts and Design from VCU, I actually am a self taught illustrator. After being an art director/designer after college, I took the leap into freelancing out my style of whimsical colorful illustration. I'm honored to have produced more than 25 kids books, worked on a wide variety of print and product and excited to see what is next! There's really no limit to what color and whimsy can be added to. The side of an airplane? Bring it on!
I paint primarily in gouache and for larger works on canvas for signage, murals or vehicle wraps, I paint in acrylic which is slightly bolder. I've had a few one man shows in galleries and have done large commissioned paintings as well.
With my design background, clients have shared with me that they appreciate my problem solving solutions along the way and my understanding of deadlines and good communications. I strive for fun even in business, because it just makes sense. Reach out if you want to brainstorm about some ideas!
In addition to my illustration work, I also write and photograph cookbooks published by Skyhorse Publishing. My favorite one is "Eat Your Way Healthy at Trader Joe's" if you would like to see my food photography https://www.smartshoot.com/bonnie-matthews
